Three Strategies for Translation Companies to Develop for Translation Services Globalization

February 17th, 2009

Under the circumstances of globalization, doing businesses on a global scale, recruiting translation talents from all over the world and integrating computer-aided translation technology into the businesses are three important strategic decisions that can bring success to translation companies.
Nowadays, many businesses get onto the track of globalization, so do translation services. In the process of globalization of translation services, if translation companies want to run their businesses successfully, they have to do three things on a strategic level to meet the challenges brought about by globalization.
First, they have to expand the company on global scale; second, they have to recruit translation talents coming from all over the world; third, they have to integrate computer-aided translation technology into management.

In the past, many translation companies delivered services only to some local customers. Since the local translation market was not very big, translation companies were always forced to attract some other businesses like printing, card making, advertising, etc. By doing so, they could make small money, but they could never expect to run their business in a more professional manner and on a large scale. However, with the development of globalization, translation has become one of the most popular industries across the world, which may include projects from small ones like translation of driving licenses, score lists of the students to big ones like providing interpreters to international conferences, preparing various negotiations, translating scientific materials in many fields, and so on. As the market is growing, running the business locally can not meet the requirements of globalization any more. In order to expand the translation company on a global scale, the company has to narrow its business scope, enlarge its business platform, build offices in cities across the world and manage its business in the direction of specialization.

In addition to running translation business professionally on a global scale, translation companies also need to recruit employees from all over the world. In the past, since translation companies only receive clients at home, the language types they engage in are limited to only several most popular languages in the world, such as English, French, Russian, Japanese, etc. Under the circumstances of globalization, whereas, the language translation may involves many native language conversions in the world, so translation companies have to recruit proficient translators from all over the world.

Last but not the least, when the market is globalized, it is also very important for integration of computer-aided translation technology into translation management and control process of the company. Decades ago, most translators did translation sentence by sentence only with the help of their brain. Although they often met with very similar expressions in one project running hundreds of pages, they had to translate those expressions again and again since they didn’t have any computer-aided translation software. In recent years, the usage of software such as TRADOS, CAT, transit, etc. has improved the working efficiency of the translation greatly. Usually, these kinds of translation assistant software have memory function, electronic glossary bank and search engine. With the help of them, the translators can search and make a comparison of the translated sentences in a fast manner so that they never need to translate those identical expressions which appear on different pages of the same article repeatedly, they can save the time which was used to repeatedly consult dictionaries thus improve their translating speed by a large margin.
Of course, in the globalization process, if translation companies want to run its business successfully, doing the above-mentioned things is not enough and many new problems may also come forth, but these three things mentioned above do play a very important role for development strategy of a translation company and ensure the business success.

Necessity of professional translation services

December 25th, 2008

AbstractThis article illustrates the necessities of the professional translation services in several aspects, such as the advantage of professional translation servicesthe huge market needs in translation field, the dissatisfactory situation of current translation services, etc

Language is an important inter-medium of information exchanging, experience sharing, cultural bearing, etc. As the bridge of different languages, professional translation services have become more and more subservient to the society, particularly in the business field.

As we all know, the world now has entered into an age of globalization, which means that communication among different countries in this decade is more frequent than any other decades in the world history. Today, speakers of different languages may sit together to talk about their families, their dreams, and most importantly the business related things. Statistics show that more than 480 multinational companies has invested in China or set up administrative offices in China among all the top 500 multinational companies in recent years. Meanwhile, China’s foreign trade continued to maintain a steady and rapid development in 2007, and the total import and export volume, which for the first time reached a new high of 20 thousand billion U. S. dollars, still kept a growth rate of about 20% during the past six years. In this case, translation plays an important role in business communication. In order to transform information accurately, professional translation services is of essential importance.

To meet the needs of the market, it is found that a great amount of translation companies has sprung up overnight and are on a high increase. However, feedbacks show that many translation works performed are not so satisfactory to meet clients’ expectations. In fact, at the present time, there still exist lots of small companies that usually organize the free-translators to do the work temporarily, leading to the problems such as low quality of translation works, delay of the clients’ business, or even cooperation disruption. Actually, this problem has been pointed out by many experts who indicated that service quality and talent management in translation field need to be further enhanced. Currently, the output value in translation field has surpassed 20 billion Yuan (RMB); although a large amount of translation companies has established, compared with the European and American market, China’s translation market is in a chaos, such as lack of guarantee for the translation quality, specific division of labor shortage as well as requisite of standard market price. In this circumstance, professional translation services are in an urgent need.

Why professional translation services can solve all the problems above? As we all know, professional translation services provide the market not only with translation talents but also convenience for searching those services concerned. On one hand, professional translation services run on the basis of a group of excellent and professional translation talents, who are masters of various kinds of languages in different fields, which fundamentally ensures the quality of translation works; on the other hand, professional translation services consist of a complete service system, which not only serves the clients with translation works, but also provide the clients with support services such as interaction platform, price inquiry service, customers’ evaluation system and so on. All of these make it convenient for the customers to gain the information about the professional translation services easily, accurately and duly, find the appropriate translation company or make a judgment of their qualification in translation services.

Aristotle once said “excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly, because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit”. As for translation, professional translation services that can guarantee quality of translation works and provide supportive services are really a necessity to the market today and it will surely benefit the translation field in the long run.

About Personal Experience in Translation

December 16th, 2008

Although I am an English teacher, I have been translating for dozens of years in my spare time. I feel that I would like to write something about technique of translation and advice on how to improve personal services to share with readers.

Nowadays, there are more and more freelance translators who provide personal translation services at home due to the development of computer and advanced network technology. They do not have to go out for working every day; but instead, stay at home and do what is required by employers or customers. The articles can be received and sent on line, and other necessary office equipments are also needed. But the most important thing that is needed is translators’ skills and experience, which guarantee good personal translation services.

For translators themselves, this working way is very convenient, because they can arrange work and their life freely. In addition, an experienced and good translator can earn much more money than in a company per month.

It is also good to the companies. The way can save much capitalized cost.

Companies do not need much room for their employees. Only a computer connected with network can solve the problems. At the same time, the bosses can make full use of the advantages of network sources, by which they can employ much more translation talents and receive business around the world. Unlimited network resources make personal translation services become more efficient and better than ever, which brings the companies huge profits.

If you are a fresh freelance translator, here, I will give you some personal advice to help you improve personal translation services. Some graduates from universities or professionals who mean to work on translation often find it much harder to be a good translator than they thought originally. Graduates only learn translation theory at school and lack practical experience, so they hardly know glossary, while professionals do not have systemic translation theory. Nevertheless, you should be confident in yourself. In fact, it is dogged that does it. If you keep digging into it and ask by any way when running into what you do not understand, you must be able to master the language. In my opinion, translation is beyond pure academia, and it is somewhat like technology. If you take it seriously, it will serve you well.

Next I would like to talk about some of my own translation experience. Although it cannot be compared with translation theory of many famous translators, I do hope that it would be of some use for your personal translation services. Because I am not a professional interpreter, I have less oral interpretation experience. Here, I put emphasis on written translation. In my opinion, for a beginner, you should try to learn as many translation theories of famous translators for all times and for all countries as possible. Theory is like a lamp, which guides you through the path of the translation. But only rich theory is not enough. As it is put, an ounce of practice is worth a pound of theory. You should master the theory in the process of practice. In addition, you should have rich linguistry of different languages, which is a generalized conception. Concretely, it includes different cultural background, grammar structure, idiom, etc. Because there are so many differences in the two languages, as a translator, it is nearly impossible to translate completely the same article as original one both in style and in meanings, but we should try our best to eke it out and make the translation get close to the original article. Therefore, we should read as many books of the two languages as we can in order to enrich our minds.

Then, I would like to talk about the methods of the translation. Some Chinese friends translate directly from Chinese to English at the beginning (and visa versa for some foreign friends), but they do not realize that it is a wrong translation method. If you want to translate your native language to another language, you must practice in a contrary order at first. For example, if a Chinese learns to translate Chinese into English, he should practice translating English into Chinese in the beginning. Only thus can he accumulate linguistry and improve English applied ability. Otherwise, his translation would be Chinglish. Finally, I would like to talk about the relations between literal translation and paraphrasing. In fact, many translators whether in ancient or in modern times have had different opinions and had personal tendency. As far as I am concerned, I prefer to paraphrasing. I think we should try our best to paraphrase. Of course, as I have mentioned above, different languages have different cultural background, so if we cannot find a proper idiom to describe the meaning of a foreign phrase or sentence, we can only translate literally.

The above is my personal opinions, and I hope it will induce others to come forward with valuable contributions. That is my purpose to write this article. I hope that it will be of any practical help to your personal translation services. Meanwhile, I welcome translators to discuss with me in order to help each other.

Tips on Creation of a Good Translation Blog

November 27th, 2008

First and foremost, let us make clear what a blog is in the general sense. According to the online Wikipedia ( the free encyclopedia ), a blog (a contraction of the term “Web log”) is a website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order.

Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for visitors to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs.

Blogs fall into different categories based on their contents or authors. According to by whom it is written or managed, a blog can be divided into either a personal blog or a corporate blog. A translation blog incorporated in the website of a translation company is of course a corporate blog.

Therefore, the translation blog, as a part of the company website, provides a window for visitors to know better about the company and serve as a bridge between them. At the same time, by interaction with visitors to its translation blog, the company can draw useful opinions and suggestions which may facilitate its future development. So it is of great importance to the company to have a good translation blog, but how do you create a good translation blog? Here are some tips that may lead you to a good translation blog.

Ø         Purpose. You should always keep in mind what your translation blog is for. All contents should be written to serve the purpose. With regard to translation blog, all articles posted are required to focus on translation-related things. Have a clear outlook on what you want to achieve with your blog. A good beginning is half done.

Ø         Design. An attractive layout can help win more visitors. Most importantly it should be convenient for visitors to read. You should take background color; color, size and type of characters; etc into consideration. Especially relatively large characters are easier to distinguish. If possible, photos, pictures, or videos may be included to catch visitors’ eyes. However, too many of them may affect the speed opening your translation blog. Remember people often have limited patience.

Ø  Contents. Whether a translation blog can be called a success largely depends on the quality of its contents, that is to say, the quality of its articles. As a translation blog, its targeted visitors are mostly translators, translation enthusiasts, or people in the translation industry. They may be interested in something that they can learn from or can be informed of, or latest developments or events in the industry. Sometimes bilingual articles may be preferred to help them understand better. Anytime quality speaks louder.

Ø        Updates. Translation blogs need regular updates. Visitors want to find something new in your translation blog, unless you have some classical ones that they want to review once and again. They may get disappointed to find that the translation blog is not updated each time they visit. You may lose them forever if they give up visiting your blog again. So get your translation blog updated and well managed regularly. Your efforts will pay you back by having more and more visitors to come.

Ø         Interaction. Feedbacks from visitors should be timely responded. Visitors show their care, attention and enthusiasm by giving comments, views, suggestions or even criticisms to your translation blog. A timely response from you will make them feel their points are taken seriously which in turn gives them a sense of participation. The interaction between you and your visitors helps improve your translation blog day by day. It will grow towards perfection with its visitors.

To put it in a nutshell, no pains no gains. The more efforts you put into it, the better your translation blog becomes.

My way of translation

November 18th, 2008

When I was in university, my tutor told me that the highest job of a foreign language major is to go a language translation company. These translators are the most needed talents in nowadays society, they are high-income, freedom and they can arrange their own time. I am not a bookworm and I never count on achieving in academe. However, it was difficult not to be tempted for working in a language translation company. Form then on, I began to focus my learning on translation. After a couple of years study, I realized that working in a translation company needs more than I can imagine. Language translation companies need not only a good language-learner, but more need a cyclopedia. In the way to work in a language translation services, remember one sentence: Purist, although exhausted.

Herein are some plain comprehends during my way of translation. If one wants to work in a language translation company, the following points may help you:

Language is not only the tool of communion, but also the information carrier and transmission media. The language which people usually refers to is not the simple spoken language and written language, it also includes the non-character language which composed by gestures, signs as well as space. This means the mission of language translation is not only translate one language sign into another language sign, but also take over the thinking and information what the language carried. To achieve this, the translation service basically should have following characteristics:

(One) First of all, should have a certain level of foreign language. For the people of foreign language major, there is no special emphasis on this point, but for the people of other majors, must notice this. Maybe, you could say “Dictionary can do”. However, dictionary could only as reference, especially to the professional language translation service, the translation’s quality is as important as quantity.

(Two) Background knowledge. This refers to the specialized knowledge that language translation service involves in. The professional background need ceaselessly improve during translation practice and study. In the process of learning translation, choose one or two specialized fields you interested in are also very important and beneficial. A translator required “know everything of something and something of everything’. Translator should have the broad aspect of knowledge, and has the thorough opinion to own translation domain. In the leisure time to spend certain energy broaden the expertise, to adapt the changing market needs, to meet the challenger of higher.

(Three) Make good use of all available resources. Let’s first talk about the software. For the translator, the most commonly used software is OFFICE and Kingsoft Powerword. The skilled operation of WORD is one of indispensable requirements to a qualified language translation company. For instance, the function of “spelling and grammar” in the WORD could help us to check the translation whether have wrong spelling or grammar phenomenon.

Second, to achieve better use of network resources. The abundant resources in internet can bring the enormous convenience for our translation. When we meet words which the dictionary software can not answer, we can make use of search engines, for example GOOGLE, there will always be unexpected results. The internet is so vast, the translation result can obtained by search is also a good and evil intermingled, sometime is inaccurate or even wrong. At this time, visits some official websites of bilingual comparison could often obtain the ideal search result.

Currently, there are numerous English-learners, but only a few could engage in the formal language translation service. Why? I think mainly have two reasons: One is the absence of practice; two is the weak in knowledge foundation. In brief, the translation in not caused by one day, this is the process which accumulates over a long period of time; this process is painful but also combined with the sense of achievement. The way of engaging language translation service is full of estimation, summarization, rejection, abnegation, and progress. In the coming days, let us go-ahead together on the way of translation.

Language Translation Services— Are We Asking Too Much?

November 17th, 2008

A couple of days ago, a generic term of a contract peeved me while I was engaged in translating it into Chinese for there was not a counterpart in Chinese vocabulary as far as I know. Therefore I put it into the search engine of a language translation service which immediately stepped out several lexical items and I chose the closest according to the context. It is something I try not to do too much thinking if there is a valuable resource available and language translation services just play this role.

Once click the mouse to search the services or applications of language translation, one may find thousands of relative items. Baidu, google, yahoo, etc. are big names of translation services. Chinese to English, Chinese to German, Chinese to Spanish or vice versa, you name it, they have it. The information they provide is amazing, too. One can find the original meaning of a word as well as its derivative meanings in a few seconds which just like an encyclopedia. One thing I appreciate very much is the function of prompting words. People like me, are apt to forget the complete spelling of words if they are not occasionally used. What I need is to input the beginning alphabets and select the right one. It is really helpful.

However, there is not always good news; just every coin has two side language translation services have shortcomings as well. Mostly, I enjoy the convenience and pleasure they bring to me. From a single word to a sentence, even the whole article, just waiting a few seconds, the result is appeared. It sounds amazing, right? However, when I look into the corresponding translation, it really depresses me because the translation of the whole sentence looks like a sequence of haphazard codes without logic, not to mention the translation of a paragraph.

This reminds me of the period when nearly everyone was annoyed by the 8000 words graduation thesis and its fussy format. The first step of us to do was to collect useful information through the internet. Inevitably, some of the information was written in Chinese and this was the golden opportunity of the application of language translation services. A classmate of mine even adopted the total corresponding translation without doing a little readjustment and handed it to his tutor. It would surely save time and energy for at least he didn’t need to type the thesis letter by letter. Just imagine the result! He was forced to rewrite his thesis from the very beginning and had to say a lot of good words to beg his tutor to give him another chance.

I do not think this phenomenon only exists in such a small sphere. Walking in the street, one can find various logos and signboards written in English while some of them make me both annoying and funny occasionally which are idiomatical Chinglish. The inaccuracy can be found in grammar, syntax, collocation, etc and the trace of copying directly from the language translation services is obvious. Of course, no one has rights to ask the others not to make mistakes. But it is the responsibility of everyone to make things which are showed to the public correctly.

Here are my guidelines to language translation services: take them just as information providers and do not let them overwhelm my own thinking. A passage or a translation is the creation of one’s hardworking. I am seeking delights by writing something, in other words, it fulfils some of my pursuits in the process of writing. I do appreciate the good points that language translation services provide. Since translation is viewed as recreation, just use our own mind to decide how to compose it rather than mechanically copying.

How to Control Quality of a Translation Project

June 13th, 2008

Many methods have been released for a wide variety of managing a translation project. But some essential tactics have been hidden behind those articles that are published free on the Internet. These tactics include project definition, translator selection, professional proofreading and quality review. The problem is how we can use these steps to assure the quality of the final translation? As for the requirement definition to a project, we should learn the writing style of the original text, special terminology and the target market the translation is used for. Terminology is a direct characteristic for the audience to get the first expression. Grammatical correction is just a normal criterion for a quality translation. Words in a language are active in real life and business practice. Many words don’t mean their meanings in a dictionary. There are many extended and even implicative meanings for active words in language practice. Only a native translator or one who have lived in a mother tongue country for a long time can grasp these meanings except for technical document translations. For technical translation, the key is to choose an expert in the technical industry concerned. He has gone through many projects on the process of either management or technical direction. He knows how the technical process works and avoids misunderstanding the details of the translation contents. Terminology in technical fields (including social science) is standardized in language practice and is used in the most common ways. The important core for the quality management is to keep glossaries updated in related fields in comparatively real time with the development of project accumulated. A good translator may not be a good proofreader. For good translators, the important thing for him/her is to catch the stream meanings of sensitive sentences and rewrite them in an understandable and fluent way and this also demands the written sentences to reflect the original style even of very national characteristic. For example, “Fuwa” is the final name of Olympic mascot for Beijing Olympic Games. It means a mascot doll for 5 kinds of happiness according to the traditional social conventions. It is got by Chinese Pinyin Romanization, which reflects the origin and expresses the original pronunciation.

A quality review always needs a professional who has the ability to inspect the translation. Perhaps he is not a perfect translator, but he can examine the fluency of sentences and the terminology accuracy and the final writing style suitable to the original text. These items require much more ability of language utility and carefulness for the details in the translation. A good proofreader looks into the translation for errors in it. His most important ability lies in amending and correcting the minor mistakes or errors hidden in the translated sentences comparing with the original text. He plays a role to adjust the improper expressions and synonyms as well as correct the mistaken spellings to make the translation more professional. Self-check is often used for small translation projects. It requires translators’ high writing quality and self-examination ability. For some projects with more than 1000 words the self-check is beyond the scope the translator can undo the mistakes in the translation because the more translated words there are, the easier the mistakes occur.

It is a must to have the translation double checked by another one in this situation. A professional translation cannot contain any minor mistake in it. The translation for publication with mistakes can destroy the public image of an organization or a company. Any translation company pursuing zero rate of error can be considered as to be responsible to its clients. For anything the result is the most important. Whatever quality control process a translation company apply, it must guarantee an accurate, sterling, fluent translation without any minor error delivered to its clients.
